Quick Tips for iMovie

0. How to close the event library panel:
Click the left-bottom button.

1. To play video from any point:
--Rest the pointer at the point where you want it to begin playing, and then press the Space bar; or
--Double-click.

2. To adjust a frame range selection, do one of the following:
--Drag the handle on either end of the selection border to extend or reduce the selection; or
--Place the pointer over the desired startpoint or endpoint and click while holding down the Shift key.

3. To trim a video clip, do one of the following:
--Hold down the Command and Option keys. When the orange selection handle appears at the end of the clip, drag the selection handle right or left to extend or reduce the clip duration by one-frame increments.
--Hold down the Option key while pressing the Left Arrow or Right Arrow key to extend or reduce the clip duration by one-frame increments.

4. To change the duration of transition:
--Highlight the transition and select Edit>Set duration.

FInishing Your Video Project: DVD and Online video

Here is a step-by-step for exporting iMovie video to iDVD to create a DVD.

1. Select it in the Project Library, and then choose Share > Media Browser.
2. Select the size that best matches what you’ll be using the video for. For iDVD, the Large size is best.
3. Click Share.
4. Wait. Rendering can take up to several minutes depending on the size of your movie.
5. Open iDVD or your other application and then look for the rendered movies in the Movies.

Preparing your movie for YouTube:

1. Select it in the Project Library, and then choose Share > Media Browser.
2. Select Mobile for proper compression of your video.

Uploading your video to YouTube is optional. However, you need to practice this process to understand the concept of "compression" of video. Search for more information of compression on the web and we will discuss in class.

How to Use a YouTube Video in iMovie

I guess there are many ways of doing it. Here is one example:

1. Copy the web page where a YouTube video is placed.
2. Go go this page: http://keepvid.com/ and paste the URL of the web page inside a blank box. Then click on Download.
3. In the next page, you will see two download options. Choose "Download ‹‹ (video.mp4 - High Quality)".
4. Then as we did in class, import this movie file to your project.

-Rough editing hands-on workshop

What to bring:

-The synopsis of your group project to discuss.

-Before the class, check out a camera (including a firewire cable) and a DV (digital video) tape per group.

If you already began to shoot your project, bring the tape to work on. If you prefer to work on your laptop, you may bring it to the class for this project.

The 8th March Committee of Women of Diverse Origins demands nothing more and nothing less. We demand an end to patriarchy and misogyny in terms of family relations, societal and political institutions, culture and the media.

In the current local and global context what is needed is a new world order that clearly identifies the roots of the current problems women and our families face around the world. The multiple oppressions generated by patriarchy and capitalism have brought us to where we are today – a world of on-going and multiple wars, severe economic insecurity, exploitation of the marginalized – class, gender and race. It is simple. It is clear. Nothing less than a completely different order, a new world order can bring about a change for a better world.

We are at a point in world history where we will not be fobbed off with 'the greater evil', 'that change comes slowly' that the demand for a better world is 'a utopian dream'. We know what the problems are. We know their causes. Only a total overhaul of the current systems can bring about lasting and meaningful change – justice and equality for all. The rapacious demands of corporations and governments in their pay with their war machines reap havoc, death and destruction on the innocent around the world, while petty despots oppress with impunity, unhindered. The free-flowing movement of capital around the world pushes workers everywhere to the lowest common denominator in terms of job security, wages and exploitative conditions. People flee war, political oppression and economic disaster to become even more exploited wherever they land. Minorities are targeted with violence and brutality.

Join us as we gather to elaborate, propose and discuss around the problems; the urgency for a new world order; what that order will be. Local and international speakers will tie together the issues – from Afghanistan to Akwesasne, from the field to the factory and the kitchen table, from the local park to the jail cells to the battlefield. We will share ideas and experiences. There will be film screenings and displays.

Come to a fundraising concert and silent auction featuring local woman artists.
This event is taking place in support of the "Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women" campaign.
All proceeds from the show at Eastern Bloc on March 6th will go towards funding a lecture (March 16) by Beverley Jacobs, president of the Native Women's Association of Canada, as well as a panel presentation featuring Jacobs, Ellen Gabriel of Quebec Native Women, and 3 women from the Kitigan Zibi reserve who have lost mothers and daughters (March 17). These events will explore the root causes of violence towards indigenous women in Canada and pressure our government to investigate the disappearance of at least 510 native women since 1980.

Documentary Film: Être et Avoir

Your Power Point Project

Hello again,

Here is what I received from the instructors regarding your power point project:

1) Choose a topic of interest from any of the Media Literacy chapters. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the chapter’s concepts. Do not regurgitate the chapter. Draw on the chapter and explain your position and research issues concerning the concepts in the chapter. This means delve further than the chapter.

2) Cite what you found out through research, and reference them in your last slide, using APA. You don’t have to site photographs and videos as they will be categorized in fair use.

3) Include at least 15 slides, 10 images, 3 external links, 2 embedded videos, and references (APA style). Pay attention to photographs, the aesthetics, transitions and use appropriate fonts, sizing, etc.

4) Burn onto a CD and label your name and email on the CD (not the jacket). Submit it to your lab teacher on March 2nd.

Embed your own video into power point

You may create a simple video by using iMovie as seen in class. If you embed video this way, you do not need an internet connection. However, when you burn a CD of your project file, burn the video file together. Simply, save both your ppt file and the videos on the desktop and burn them altogether on the CD. You need to do this because by embedding the videos your ppt file does not actually include the video but instead it makes a link to the video.

Class (March 2nd)

1. Form a group for your video project (about 3 people per group).
2. Bring one or two possible topics (per group) for your project. If you haven't made a group, bring your own ideas. We will discuss them together and find a home for you.
3. Bring a DV (Digital Video) tape.
4. Bring a couple of photos and some music files to experiment on iMovie application.
5. Before the class begins, check out a camera per group.

6. And lastly, submit your power point presentation project (PPPP)!

Or you may combine the embedding trick and the external link that we used last week. Here is how to do it:

Change the address to http://www.youtube.com/v/4yzUxNbi1h4
by deleting "watch?" and "=".

Then as I showed last week, insert the web address as an external link in your ppt slide. In this way, you may jump to the video on the web browser instead of its web page on YouTube.

(Just for your reference: pratically, this method is considered safer as video embeded in PPT may often cause some problems depending on the computer operating system you work on.)
